Bird feeders come in many forms. You can find almost any style that will match your home, your yard, or your available space. Some feeders are created with certain types of birds in mind, so it’s wise to do a little research first so you know what birds are around that will want to join in.
Wooden house or hopper style feeders are very popular. They blend nicely with back yard settings and they tend to be pretty durable. Keep in mind when considering feeders just how often you will have to refill them. A wood feeder can come in pretty decent sizes so you don’t have to fill it as often. These feeders can be hung or mounted on a pole.
Tube feeders are cylindrical with perches next to holes so the birds can get at the seed. These are generally hanging feeders. They may require you to fill more often because as the seed gets eaten it sinks down the tube and can leave higher perches out of reach of the food. Take a good look at any tube feeder you are considering getting. The perches can be small, and sometimes the feeding holes can be too small for larger birds.
Ground feeders can be a popular choice if you live with birds who prefer to eat off the ground. These feeders are pretty open and provide a comfortable place for birds to land and snack. Keep in mind with any feeder, and especially these, that birds won’t be the only creatures who are attracted to your yard. Squirrels can especially be pests, and if they really bother you then a ground feeder may not be the right kind for you.
When you are considering what kinds of birds you want to attract don’t overlook the hummingbird. You will have to get a hummingbird feeder specifically for them, and the liquid mixture is quite a bit different from the normal seed. It can be worth it though, to see them buzzing around your backyard. Placing a hummingbird feeder near a window can let you have a nice view when they hover to eat.
